How Safe Is Your Church for Children?

Instructions. Use this sliding scale to respond to the following statements: 0 = the statement is never true; 10 = the statement is always true. Use the numbers between 0 and 10 to indicate the relative degree to which the statement is true. For example, 5 would indicate that the statement is true about 50% of the time, 3 would indicate about 30%, and 7 would indicate about 70%.

1. One individual is permitted to take a young child to the restroom alone.

2. Classrooms used by young children do not have windows or any other means to monitor activity in the room.

3. A married couple may be left alone with minor children, including youth.

4. An unmarried man can work in the nursery.

5. People working with children -- including those working with youth -- do not go through any type of screening process.

6. Children (including youth) are left alone with only one adult at some time.

7. Two friends can request to work together in the nursery on a regular and scheduled basis.

8. Individuals are allowed to work with children -- including youth -- prior to being in the church for a minimum of three months.

9. Only one person is involved in the changing of a diaper or the monitoring of open children's restrooms.

10. Young children are allowed to walk to a restroom area outside of the nursery/classroom area without adult supervision.
